Amateur Computerist
The Amateur Computerist grew out of a battle against the
cancellation of computer programming classes for hourly workers at
the Ford Motor Company Rouge Factory. The newsletter deals with
computer issues and labor issues. The Amateur Computerist is
dedicated to support for grassroots efforts like the "computers
for the people movement" that gave birth to the personal computer
in the 70s and 80s. Articles about these developments have
appeared in past issues of the newsletter. Most recently the
newsletter is documenting the history of the development of the
Global Network, of Usenet, and of Unix and the progressive impact
of these important breakthroughs.

Big Dummy Update
The Big Dummy's Guide to the Internet was never meant to be the
definitive work on every possible facet of the Internet. For one
thing, the Net is growing so rapidly that any book that tried to
list all its resources would be outdated the day it was published.
But more important, such a guide would be so long that a beginner
could easily get lost in it trying to learn such fundamental
things as how to log on. That's where the Big Dummy Update comes
in. Every month, it will look at topics not covered well, if at
all, in the original guide -- topics that, as you become more
comfortable as a net.surfer, you'll want to know more about. And
because the Internet continues to grow exponentially, the Update
will also carry news of interesting Net resources and tools.

CHIP; The Chile Information Project
The Chile Information Project in its three year existence has
worked to inform concerned groups and individuals outside of Chile
about human rights and democratization developments occurring
within the country. More recently CHIP's daily news summaries have
been expanded to include environmental and economic development
trends in Chile.CHIP was originally hosted by the Vicaria of
Solidarity, but is now a completely independent organization
working out of the offices of the Committee for the Defense of the
Environment (CODEFF). Subscriber payments are its only source of
income.Transmits a daily news summary via electronic mail to major
human rights groups, environmentalists and interested parties all
over the world. This news summary references the source for each
story (El Mercurio, La Epoca, La Nacion, etc.) and is the work
product of CHIP, with occasional input by the Vicaria Studies
Department, journalists at the Vicaria, and the Agrupacion de
Familiares de Detenidos Desaparecidos, as well as different
Chilean environmental organizations.

ctt-Digest; The comp.text.tex Newsgroup Digest
A digest form of posts appearing on the Usenet newsgroup
comp.text.tex, which do not originate on INFO-TeX. Periodic posts
appearing on comp.text.tex which are included in the TeX-Pubs
distribution are removed prior to distribution. When a posting is
removed, it is noted at the end of the issue. Combined with INFO-
TeX (which is mirrored to comp.text.tex) and TeX-Pubs (which
carries periodic publications), it completes the triangle of major
network-based communications on TeX-related topics as mail-bound
users are provided complete access to one of Usenet's largest
newsgroups. Generated and distributed daily at approximately 0200
CDT/CST (U.S.). It is digested into parts not exceeding 40k in
size to accommodate size-sensitive mailers and gateways, so
multiple parts are common.

FactSheet Five; Electric
Central clearinghouse of information about zines, which are small
press magazines published by individuals or groups of people who
need to communicate with others about subjects of intense,
passionate interest. Zines cover topics such as abortion, Star
Trek, White (or Black) Supremacy, where the publisher has
travelled lately, what God had to say to the publisher, how to
modify a scanner to intercept cellular phone calls, what books to
read, why work should be abolished, what it's like to be in jail,
practical use of Tarot cards and/or wild plants and other diverse
topics. We receive these zines, read them and publish information
about obtaining them and our opinion of the zine. F5-E is
published in conjunction with the printed version, Factsheet Five.
Some of the reviews in F5-E are time-delayed by three months so
the two publications don't compete. However, F5-E has reviews
from several sources, and thus has more reviews than the paper
version.

GNU's Bulletin: Newsletter of the Free Software Foundation
News about the GNU Project. The Free Software Foundation is
dedicated to eliminating restrictions on copying, redistribution,
understanding, and modification of computer programs, by promoting
the development and use of free software in all areas of computer
use. Specifically, the FSF is putting together a complete
integrated software system named ``GNU'' (GNU's Not Unix) that
will be upwardly compatible with Unix. Some large parts of this
system are already working, and are being distributed now. The
word "free'' in the name refers to two specific freedoms: first,
the freedom to copy a program and give it away to friends and
coworkers; second, the freedom to change a program as needed, by
having full access to source code. Other organizations distribute
whatever free software happens to be available. By contrast, FSF
concentrates on development of new free software, working towards
a system complete enough to eliminate the need to purchase a
proprietary system.
For paper bulletin, send a business sized self-addressed
stampedenvelope ($.52 US postage only) and an optional donation to
Free Software Foundation. FSF does not maintain a subscription
list for the Bulletin, which can be read in the USENET newsgroup

List Review Service
Explores e-mail distribution lists (primarily BITNET Listserv).
The quantity of information available via network access makes
only the most cursory examinations of lists possible. Akin to
book and restaurant reviews, each issue begins with a narrative
description of about one week's worth of monitoring, then presents
simple statistical data such as the number ofmessages and lines,
number of queries and non-queries, number of subscribers and
countries represented, list owner, location, and how to subscribe.
The service attempts to explore as wide a range of lists as
possible, from the hard sciences to the fuzziest of the
humanities.

MIM Notes
Maoist International Movement is a revolutionary communist party
that celebrated its 10th anniversary in October 1993. We grow
from the revoltionary tradition of Marx, Engels, Lenin, Stalin and
Mao in theory; and from the Russian revolution (1917-1953) and the
Chinese revolution (1949-1976) in practice. In America, we follow
most recently from the tradition of the Blank Panther Party of the
late 1960s and early 1970s, and are descendents from the post-
Panther party formations. MIM Notes speaks to and from the
viewpoint of the world's oppressed majority, and against the
imperialist patriarchy.

Music-Research Digest **PLEASE READ CONTENT DESCRIPTION BELOW
BEFORE SUBSCRIBING**
The Music-Research electronic mail redistribution list was
established after a suggestion made at a meeting in Oxford in July
1986, to provide an effective and fast means of bringing together
musicologists, music analysts, computer scientists, and others
working on applications of computers in music research. As with
any forum for discussion, there are certain subject areas which
are of particular interest to the group of people on this list.
Initially, the list was established for people whose chief
interests concern computers and their applications to-music
representation systems-information retrieval systems for musical
scores-music printing-music analysis-musicology and
ethnomusicology-tertiary music education***The list DOES NOT cover

Postmodern Jewish Philosophy BITNETWORK
Postmodern Judaism, philosophically considered, dedicated both to
a philosophic review of the variety of postmodern Jewish
discourses and to postmodern reflections on the variety of Jewish
philosophies and Jewish philosophic theologies. What "postmodern"
means here is a question to be answered only in the doing. The
journal is in between Listserv lists and a standard newsletter-
journal. Members send materials electronically to theeditor, who
edits them into a journal format and about three times a year
sends them to the distribution list. In 1994-95, the NETWORK will
pay particular attention to studies of Talmud in the light of (and
obscurity of) postmodern Jewish philosophy.

include posting date. Followups on single-topic postings are given
a letter designation following the Arabic numeral of the original

it is not handled by a listserver and does not expect to create
